by Jason Kendall

What can a student looking for training tracks certified by Microsoft expect to come across? Undoubtedly, training organizations ought to have a selection of course choices that meet the requirements of training tracks certified by Microsoft. You’ll want to consider all the options with a person who understands the commercial demands for IT staff, and can influence your choice of the most fruitful career to suit your abilities and character. Once you’ve decided on the area you want to get into, your next search is for a suitable training program customized to your needs. Your course material should be second to none.

Many training companies offer a Job Placement Assistance program, to help you into your first commercial role. But don’t place too much emphasis on it – it isn’t unusual for training companies to overplay it. The fact of the matter is, the still growing need for IT personnel in the United Kingdom is why employers will be interested in you.

Help and assistance with preparing a CV and getting interviews should be offered (if not, see one of our sites for help). Make sure you update that dusty old CV immediately – not after you’ve qualified! Various junior support roles have been bagged by trainees who’re still on their course and have still to get qualified. This will at the very least get you on your way. Generally, a specialist independent regional recruitment consultant or service (who will get paid commission to place you) will perform better than any sector of a centralized training facility. It also stands to reason that they’ll be familiar with local industry and the area better.

A regular aggravation for many training providers is how hard men and women are prepared to study to get top marks in their exams, but how ill-prepared they are to market themselves for the role they’ve trained for. Don’t falter at the last fence.

Ensure all your exams are current and commercially required – you’re wasting your time with programs which end up with a useless in-house certificate or plaque. Unless your qualification is issued by a company like Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or Adobe, then chances are it won’t be commercially viable – because it won’t give an employer any directly-useable skills.

Don’t forget: a training program or a certification is not what you’re looking for; the career that you want to end up in is. A lot of colleges seem to put too much weight in the qualification itself. You may train for one year and then end up doing the job for 20 years. Don’t make the error of finding what seems like a program of interest to you and then put 10-20 years into a job you don’t like!

Stay focused on what it is you’re trying to achieve, and build your study action-plan from that – don’t do it the other way round. Stay on target and begin studying for a job you’ll still be enjoying many years from now. Your likely to need help from someone that knows the commercial realities of the sector you’re considering, and who can offer ‘A day in the life of’ synopsis for that career-path. These things are incredibly important as you’ll need to fully understand if this change is right for you.

It’s essential to have accredited simulation materials and an exam preparation system as part of your course package. Due to the fact that many IT examination boards tend to be American, you’ll need to be used to the correct phraseology. It’s no use merely answering any old technical questions – it’s essential that you can cope with them in the proper exam format. Ensure that you ask for exam preparation tools so you’ll be able to verify your comprehension along the way. Simulated or practice exams add to your knowledge bank – so you won’t be quite so nervous at the actual exam.

At the top of your shopping list for a training program should be comprehensive 24×7 direct-access support with dedicated instructors and mentors. It’s an all too common story to find providers that only provide office hours (or extended office hours) support. Look for training with proper support available at all hours of the day and night (even if it’s early hours on Sunday morning!) You want access directly to professional tutors, and not a message system as this will slow you down – parked in a queue of others waiting to be called back when it’s convenient for them.

The best trainers incorporate three or four individual support centres across multiple time-zones. Online access provides the interactive interface to seamlessly link them all, at any time you choose, help is at hand, with no hassle or contact issues. If you accept anything less than online 24×7 support, you’ll end up kicking yourself. You might not want to use the service throughout the night, but what about weekends, evenings and early mornings at some point.

If we could change our lifestyle to get some extra sleep, and decrease the amount of stress we endure, we might just find we lose weight as well. We find it hard to say no, and so end up rushing around doing far too many tasks – often skimping things instead of taking the time to do them well. Tension increases as one thing after another piles up. And that’s when we develop an overwhelming desire for food.

But now it seems there’s a scientific reason why we reach for the most fattening foods at times high stress and exhaustion. This is the thinking behind weight gain that is stress related: When the human body undergoes enduring tension, it exudes the stress-hormone cortisol.

The presence of cortisol encourages a release of insulin (attempting to level out the blood sugar). This in turn leads to a desire to eat more food high in fat and carbohydrate. So we eat carbs and fats, and pretty quickly feel more energised.

For a while the stress settles down and we feel satiated. Yet shortly after that, we feel drained again. An explanation for this is as follows: the insulin removes the glucose from the blood, and then allocates it to areas of the body that store fat, e.g. the waist.

Thus if weight loss is your objective, first try to create a more harmonious lifestyle! It’s also thought that there could be a relationship between the amount of sleep we have each night and our weight. There was a time when the average person slept eight hours a night. This is no longer the case, with seven being optimistic for many today.

Respectively, the level of obesity in our society has risen. There could be a hormonal link to the two factors. Poor sleep patterns stimulate an increase in our appetite hormones. Since we have a longer ‘day time’, the body’s logic is that it needs more food.

Obviously, when we’re tired, we feel the need for more fuel to energise ourselves, and once again we crave high fats and carbs. Sleeping for an additional hour a night could well re-program our appetite.

In short, gaining weight could have been more down to lifestyle than anything else. Why not ask others to take on some of your workload – delegation is often the answer. And so when night-time falls, you’re ready to drift off to sleep at a reasonable time, without fighting the desire for just one more snack!

When you decide to change something in your life, setting goals and making a plan is vital. If you’re aiming to lose weight, targets and goals must be incorporated into the plan. Successful people from all walks of life don’t just wake up one morning as high achievers!

Before you embark on your weight loss regime, you’ll find it valuable to set yourself a series of goals or targets to help you complete the course. Targets that take a bit of effort, but certainly can be done will keep you on track. Keep your goals easy to understand and measure. They should always be specific, and start reasonably short-term.

Use the following five D’s to help you get emotionally involved with the result of your efforts. Write your five D’s down in a contract to yourself. First of all define what it is that you wish to get from successful weight reduction. Have a clear-cut picture of who you will be and the lifestyle you’ll enjoy when the excess weight has gone.

Our desires are what truly inspire us to do something. Get emotionally involved with what they are. For instance is it because you want to gain the approval of another person, have more fun or feel less restricted?

The next thing to consider is Dedication… It’s really important to put specific time aside to do your exercises. Make an appointment with yourself to fulfil your future and keep to it.

This not only helps you to get into a routine, it’s also an indicator for those around you that you’re engaged in something that’s important to you. Other people will understand your priorities better when you stick to a commitment. It means when you’re relaxing you won’t be feeling guilty that you’re not working-out, and when you’re exercising you won’t be feeling you’re missing out on some other activity.

The purpose of a contract is to have written evidence of your Determination. It helps having a physical document that is there for all to see. Finally, a Disciplined individual will have the strength to cope with set-backs. Obviously there will be knocks along the way, but a well planned regime will bring structure to your weight loss efforts.

Once you’ve done this, sign your contract and do not put it away in a drawer. Write down your goals in a specific and realistic manner, then work diligently and consistently to achieve them. Your successful weight loss regime will depend on it.

by Jason Kendall

You should feel pleased that you’ve made it this far! A small number of workers claim contentment with their job, but most of us complain to each other and take no action. By looking for this it’s probable that you’re finding out about training, so you’ve already stood out from the crowd. Now you just need to research and follow-through.

It’s advisable to get some help before you start – talk to someone who’s familiar with your chosen field; an advisor who can discover your ideal job, and then show you the courses which will get you there:

* Are you hoping to be involved with others in the workplace? Would you prefer to work with a small team or with a lot of new people? Possibly operating on your own in isolation would be more your thing?

* The banks and building sector are facing difficulties these days, so which sector would suit you best?

* Should this be the only time you’ll need to re-qualify?

* Do you have niggles about the chance of getting new work, and being gainfully employed all the way until retirement?

A predominant industry in this country to tick all of the above boxes is the IT sector. There is a requirement for greater numbers of knowledgeable workers in IT, – take a look at any jobsite and there’ll be a long list. Don’t misunderstand and think it’s all techie people gazing towards theirscreens all day – there are loads more jobs than that. The majority of employees in IT are ordinary people, and they have very interesting and well paid jobs.

You have to be sure that all your qualifications are what employers want – don’t even consider programs which lead to some in-house certificate (which is as useless as if you’d printed it yourself). From an employer’s perspective, only the major heavyweights such as Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco or CompTIA (for example) really carry any commercial clout. Anything less just doesn’t cut the mustard.

The classroom style of learning we remember from school, involving piles of reference textbooks, is usually pretty hard going. If you’re nodding as you read this, look for learning programmes that are multimedia based. Where possible, if we can study while utilising as many senses as possible, then the results are usually dramatically better.

Find a course where you’ll receive a selection of CD or DVD ROM’s – you’ll begin by watching videos of instructors demonstrating the skills, with the facility to hone your abilities through virtual lab’s. It would be silly not to view a small selection of training examples before you sign the purchase order. What you want are videoed instructor demonstrations and a variety of audio-visual and interactive sections.

Purely on-line training should be avoided. You want physical CD/DVD ROM course materials where offered, so you can use them wherever and whenever you want – it’s not wise to be held hostage to a good broadband connection all the time.

Several companies supply a practical Job Placement Assistance program, to help you into your first commercial role. Because of the great skills shortage in the United Kingdom today, it’s not necessary to make too much of this option though. It really won’t be that difficult to get your first job once you’re properly qualified.

Bring your CV up to date as soon as possible however (advice can be sought on this via your provider). Don’t put it off till you’ve finished your exams. Various junior support jobs have been offered to trainees who’re still on their course and have yet to take their exams. This will at the very least get you on your way. In many cases, a specialist locally based employment agency – who make their money when they’ve found you a job – should get better results than any recruitment division from a training organisation. Also of course they should be familiar with the local industry and employment needs.

A constant frustration for some course providers is how hard students are prepared to study to pass exams, but how ill-prepared they are to market themselves for the position they have acquired skills for. Don’t give up when the best is yet to come.

Being a part of progressive developments in new technology really is electrifying. You personally play your part in shaping the next few decades. We’re only just starting to see just how technology will define our world. Computers and the Internet will profoundly transform how we regard and interact with the entire world over the coming decades.

Wages in the IT sector aren’t to be ignored either – the average salary in the United Kingdom for the usual person working in IT is significantly higher than in the rest of the economy. It’s a good bet you’ll bring in a whole lot more than you could reasonably hope to get in other industries. Experts agree that there’s a substantial national demand for qualified IT professionals. In addition, with the constant growth in the marketplace, it appears this will be the case for years to come.

Student support is absolutely essential – locate a good company that provides 24×7 direct access, as anything else will annoy you and definitely hamper your progress. Find a good quality service where you can receive help at all hours of the day and night (no matter if it’s in the middle of the night on a weekend!) Make sure it’s always 24×7 direct access to mentors and instructors, and not a call-centre that will take messages so you’re waiting for tutors to call you back when it’s convenient for them.

Top training companies have many support offices across multiple time-zones. An online system provides an interactive interface to join them all seamlessly, at any time you choose, help is at hand, without any problems or delays. You can’t afford to accept anything less. Direct-access 24×7 support is really your only option when it comes to computer-based courses. Perhaps you don’t intend to study during the evenings; but for the majority of us however, we’re at work when traditional support if offered.

When thinking of a course in IT it is very important that the certification you will gain falls in line with the working world. In addition, ensure that your training suits you, your abilities and your personality. There are so many directions you can go in. Some people need User Skills from Microsoft, whilst others want to get their teeth into Web Design, Databases, Programming or Networking – and all can be catered for. However, with so many to choose from, don’t just guess. It’s much better to discuss your needs with an advisor who knows the computer industry, and can help you arrive at the right destination.

By utilising modern training techniques and getting rid of wasteful procedures, you will start to see a new kind of organisation offering a better quality of computer training and back-up for very competitive prices.

Adding in the cost of exams upfront then giving it ‘Exam Guarantee’ status is a popular marketing tool with many companies. Consider the facts:

We all know that we’re still paying for it – it’s not so hard to see that it’s been added into the full cost of the package supplied by the training company. Certainly, it’s not a freebie (it’s just marketing companies think we’ll fall for anything they say!) It’s well known in the industry that when students fund their own exams, one after the other, they will be much more likely to pass every time – as they’ll be conscious of their payment and will therefore apply themselves appropriately.

Take your exams as locally as possible and look for the very best offer you can at the time. A lot of extra profit is secured by a number of companies who get money for exam fees in advance. Many students don’t take them for one reason or another and so the company is quids-in. Amazingly, providers exist that depend on students not taking their exams – as that’s where a lot of their profit comes from. Remember, with the majority of Exam Guarantees – you are not in control of when you are allowed to do a re-take. They’ll only allow a re-take once completely satisfied.

Exam fees averaged around the 112 pounds mark in the last 12 months through Prometric or VUE centres around the United Kingdom. So don’t be talked into shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds more to get ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when it’s no secret that the responsible approach is consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software.

Consider only retraining programs which will grow into industry approved exams. There’s a plethora of minor schools promoting ‘in-house’ certificates which will prove unusable in today’s commercial market. If your certification doesn’t come from a big-hitter like Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco, then it’s likely it won’t be commercially viable – because it won’t give an employer any directly-useable skills.

The world of information technology is amongst the most thrilling and changing industries to be involved in today. Being a member of a team working on breakthroughs in technology is to do your bit in the gigantic changes that will affect us all over the next generation. We’ve barely started to get a feel for how technology is going to shape our lives. The internet will massively transform the way we see and interrelate with the world as a whole over the coming decades.

The standard IT technician in the UK can demonstrate that they receive significantly more money than his or her counterpart in much of the rest of the economy. Average wages are hard to beat nationally. There is a significant country-wide demand for trained and qualified IT technicians. Also, as the industry constantly develops, it looks like there will be for the significant future.

Trainees looking at this market can be very practical by nature, and aren’t really suited to the classroom environment, and slogging through piles of books. If you’re thinking this sounds like you, try the newer style of interactive study, where you can learn everything on-screen. If we can study while utilising as many senses as possible, our results will often be quite spectacular.

Start a study-program in which you’ll get a host of CD and DVD based materials – you’ll begin by watching videos of instructors demonstrating the skills, and then have the opportunity to fine-tune your skills in fully interactive practice sessions. Make sure to obtain a demonstration of the study materials from the school that you’re considering. The materials should incorporate slide-shows, instructor-led videos and virtual practice lab’s for your new skills.

It’s usually bad advice to choose training that is only available online. With highly variable reliability and quality from all internet service providers, you should always obtain CD or DVD ROM based materials.

You should look for an authorised exam preparation system included in your course. Because a lot of examination boards in IT are American, you must be prepared for the way exams are phrased. It’s no use simply understanding random questions – it’s essential that you can cope with them in the proper exam format. It’s a good idea to have some simulated exam questions so you’ll be able to verify your understanding along the way. Simulations of exams log the information in your brain – then the real thing isn’t quite as scary.

by Jason Kendall

Only one in ten people in the UK today are claiming to be happy in their job. Of course, most will do nothing about it. The fact that you’ve got this far at least indicates that you’re considering or may be ready for a change.

It’s in your interests that before you start a training course, you discuss your plans with a person who knows the industry and can point you in the right direction. The right person will be able to assess your personal likes and dislikes and give you guidance on the right role for you:

* Do you see yourself dealing with people? Would that be with the same people or with a lot of new people? It could be working by yourself with your own methodology would give you pleasure?

* What elements are you looking for from the industry your job is in? (Things do change – look at the building trade, or banks for example.)

* Is this the final time you want to study, and based on that, do you suppose your new career will offer that choice?

* Are you worried about the chance of finding new employment, and being gainfully employed to the end of your working life?

Think about the IT industry, it will be well worth your time – it’s one of the few sectors of industry still growing in Great Britain and Europe. Salaries are also more generous than most.

Huge changes are flooding technology over the next few decades – and it only gets more exciting every day. We’re in the very early stages of beginning to see just how technology will define our world. Technology and the web will profoundly change the way we view and interrelate with the world as a whole over the coming decades.

The typical IT employee over this country as a whole is likely to get significantly more money than fellow workers in much of the rest of the economy. Average wages are around the top of national league tables. Apparently there is not a hint of a downturn for IT jobs increases across Britain. The market is continuing to expand rapidly, and as we have a significant shortage of skilled professionals, it’s not likely that it will even slow down for the significant future.

Often, students don’t think to check on a vitally important element – how their company segments the training materials, and into how many bits. Usually, you’ll join a programme that takes between and 1 and 3 years and receive a module at a time. It seems to make sense on one level, but consider these issues: What would their reaction be if you find it difficult to do each and every module at the speed they required? Sometimes their preference of study order doesn’t work as well as an alternative path could be.

An ideal situation would be to have every piece of your study pack delivered to you right at the start; the entire thing! Then, nothing can hinder your capability of finishing.

If you’re thinking of using a training academy which still utilises workshops as a feature of their programme, then take note of these typical downsides encountered by most students:

* A lot of journeys to the workshops – usually 100’s of miles.

* Monday to Friday availability to workshops is the norm, and trying to take several days leave in a single chunk can represent quite a problem for many working people.

* Most of us find 4 weeks annual leave doesn’t go very far. Sacrifice a big chunk of this for study events and see how much more difficult it makes things.

* ‘In-Centre’ workshop days normally end up way too big.

* Workshop pace – workshops often contain students of different aptitude, so tension develops between the quicker-learners and those who prefer a more relaxed pace.

* The cost of travel – driving or taking public transport backwards and forwards to the training premises plus bed and breakfast can really add up each time you attend. If we just assume a basic 5-10 workshops at about thirty-five pounds for an over-night room, plus 40 pounds for petrol and 15.00 for food, we find an extra four to nine hundred pounds of costs that we weren’t expecting.

* Is it worth any chance of getting ignored for a lift up the ladder or wage increases because you’re getting trained in a different area.

* Don’t think it’s unusual for trainees not to put a question forward that they would like answered – purely because they’re surrounded by fellow attendees.

* Usually, events are virtually undoable, when you work or live away for part of the week.

It obviously makes a lot more sense to be trained when it suits you — not the training company – and utilise videos of instructors with interactive virtual-lab’s. Training can take place wherever it suits you. If you have a laptop, why not catch some fresh air in your garden as you work. Any issues that arise just get onto the live 24×7 support. You can go back and re-cover all the study modules as many times as you want to. There’s absolutely no need to jot down any notes because the class is available whenever you want it. The outcome: Reduced stress, saved money, and absolutely no travelling.

by Jason Kendall

There are a range of options on the market for people who’d like to get into the IT industry. To help you decide on one that will suit you, seek out a training provider with assistance to help you find an ideal career for your personality, or at least explain the details of the job, so you can be sure it’s the right one for you. If you’re mulling over upgrading your IT skill-set, maybe with some office user skills, or even loftier ambitions, you can choose from many training options.

Because there are such a lot of sensibly priced, easy-to-use training and support, it’s easy to find a course that should get you to your destination.

Make sure you don’t get caught-up, as a lot of students can, on the training course itself. Your training isn’t about getting a plaque on your wall; this is about gaining commercial employment. Focus on the end-goal. Imagine training for just one year and then end up doing a job for a lifetime. Don’t make the mistake of taking what may be an ‘interesting’ course only to spend 20 years doing a job you don’t like!

Get to grips with earning potential and how ambitious you are. This can often control which precise exams you will need and what you can expect to give industry in return. All students are advised to talk with experienced industry personnel before they make a decision on a particular retraining course. This helps to ensure it contains the commercially required skills for the career that is sought.

Make sure that all your exams are what employers want – don’t bother with programs that lead to in-house certificates. Only nationally recognised examinations from companies such as Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco and Adobe will be useful to a future employer.

The classroom style of learning we remember from school, utilising reference manuals and books, is often a huge slog for most of us. If you’re nodding as you read this, dig around for more practical courses that are multimedia based. Many years of research has time and time again shown that an ‘involved’ approach to study, where we utilise all our senses, is proven to produce longer-lasting and deeper memory retention.

Find a course where you’ll receive a selection of CD or DVD ROM’s – you’ll start with videos of instructor demonstrations, followed by the chance to use virtual lab’s to practice your new skills. It’s wise to view some of the typical study materials provided before you make your decision. Always insist on video tutorials, instructor demo’s and audio-visual elements backed up by interactive lab’s.

It’s folly to select online only courseware. With highly variable reliability and quality from most broadband providers, make sure you get CD or DVD ROM based materials.

The way in which your courseware is broken down for you can often be overlooked. How is the courseware broken down? And in what order and do you have a say in when you’ll get each part? Delivery by courier of each element stage by stage, taking into account your exam passes is how things will normally arrive. This sounds sensible, but you might like to consider this: Maybe the order of study insisted on by the company won’t suit you. You may find it a stretch to finalise all the elements inside their defined time-scales?

In an ideal situation, you’d get ALL the training materials right at the beginning – enabling you to have them all to come back to in the future – as and when you want. Variations can then be made to the order that you move through the program as and when something more intuitive seems right for you.

The somewhat scary thought of finding your first IT job can be eased by some companies, via a Job Placement Assistance programme. The need for this feature can be bigged up out of proportion though – it’s easy for companies marketing departments to overplay it. Ultimately, the massive skills shortage in the UK is what will make you attractive to employers.

CV and Interview advice and support might be provided (alternatively, check out one of our sites for help). Be sure to you polish up your CV immediately – don’t wait until you’ve finished your exams! Getting onto the ‘maybe’ pile of CV’s is more than not being regarded at all. Often junior support jobs are given to trainees (who’ve only just left first base.) Generally, an independent and specialised local recruitment consultancy (who will get paid by the employer when they’ve placed you) will perform better than any division of a training company. They should, of course, also be familiar with the local industry and employment needs.

Do ensure you don’t conscientiously work through your course materials, and then do nothing more and expect somebody else to find you a job. Get off your backside and make your own enquiries. Channel as much time and energy into finding your first job as you did to get trained.

Training for your CompTIA A+ covers 4 different sectors – you’ll have to qualify in 2 different areas to reach the level of competent in A+. This is why, most colleges only offer two of the training options. Our opinion is this will under prepare you – certainly you’ll have the qualification, but training on all 4 will set you apart in your working life, where you’ll need a more comprehensive understanding. So that’s why you should train in the whole course.

Once on the CompTIA A+, you’ll become familiar with how to build and repair PC’s and operate in antistatic conditions. Fault finding and diagnostic techniques through hands on and remote access are also covered. If you feel it appropriate to add Network+ to your CompTIA A+ training course, you’ll additionally be equipped to look after networks, meaning you’re in a position to expect a better remuneration package.

One interesting way that training companies make a big mark-up is via an ‘exam inclusive’ package and offering an exam guarantee. This looks like a great idea for the student, until you think it through:

You’ll be charged for it ultimately. One thing’s for sure – it isn’t free – it’s just been rolled into the price of the whole package. For those who want to get a first time pass, you must pay for one exam at a time, prioritise it appropriately and give the task sufficient application.

Isn’t it outrageous to have to pay your training course provider in advance for exams? Find the best exam deal or offer when you take the exam, rather than pay marked up fees – and take it closer to home – rather than possibly hours away from your area. Paying upfront for examinations (and interest charges if you’re borrowing money) is insane. It’s not your job to boost the training company’s account with extra money of yours just to give them a good cash-flow! There are those who hope that you won’t get round to taking them – then they’ll keep the extra money. Re-takes of previously unsuccessful exams via training companies with an ‘Exam Guarantee’ inevitably are heavily regulated. They’ll insist that you take mock exams first so you can prove to them you have a good chance of passing.

Shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds on ‘Exam Guarantees’ is remiss – when a commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools is what will really guarantee success.

Being a part of the cutting-edge of new technology really is electrifying. You personally play your part in defining the world to come. Computing technology and communication via the internet will dramatically change the direction of our lives over the coming years; to a vast degree.

A usual IT man or woman throughout Britain will also receive significantly more than his or her counterpart outside of IT. Typical salaries are amongst the highest in the country. Demand for certified IT specialists is certain for many years to come, because of the continuous development in the marketplace and the massive shortage still present.

Many commercial training providers will only offer support to you inside of office hours (typically 9am-6pm) and sometimes a little earlier or later; not many go late into the evening (after 8-9pm) or cover weekends properly. You’ll be waiting ages for an answer with email based support, and phone support is often to a call-centre which will take the information and email an instructor – who’ll call back sometime over the next 1-3 days, at a suitable time to them. This is not a lot of use if you’re stuck with a particular problem and only have certain times available in which to do your studies.

The very best programs tend to use an online access 24 hours-a-day facility combining multiple support operations from around the world. You’re offered a single, easy-to-use interface which accesses the most appropriate office irrespective of the time of day: Support when it’s needed. If you accept anything less than direct-access 24×7 support, you’ll regret it. You may not need it during the night, but consider weekends, late evenings or early mornings.

We’d hazard a guess that you’re a practical sort of person – a ‘hands-on’ personality type. Usually, the painful task of reading endless manuals is something you’ll force on yourself if you absolutely have to, but you really wouldn’t enjoy it. So look for on-screen interactive learning packages if books just don’t do it for you. Research over recent years has always shown that an ‘involved’ approach to study, where we utilise all our senses, is proven to produce longer-lasting and deeper memory retention.

Modern training can now be done at home via self-contained CD or DVD materials. Instructor-led tutorials will mean you’ll find things easier to remember through their teaching and demonstrations. You can then test yourself by practicing and interacting with the software. Be sure to get a look at some courseware examples from the school that you’re considering. The package should contain slide-shows, instructor-led videos and fully interactive skills-lab’s.

It’s usually bad advice to select online only courseware. With highly variable reliability and quality from your average broadband company, you should always obtain actual CD or DVD ROM’s.

All programs you’re considering should always lead to a nationally accepted certification at the end – and not some unimportant ‘in-house’ printed certificate to hang in your hallway. The top IT companies like Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA each have internationally acknowledged proficiency programs. Huge conglomerates such as these will make sure you’re employable.

Considering an MCSE? Then it’s likely that you’ll fall into one of two camps: You’re someone with a certain amount of knowledge and you’d like to gain accreditation with an MCSE certification. Or you might be just about to enter the computer workplace, and you’ve found there is a great need for people with the right qualifications.

When researching computer training companies, steer clear of those who reduce their costs by failing to provide the latest level of Microsoft development. Overall, this will end up costing the student a lot more as they will have been studying an outdated MCSE course which will have to be revised almost immediately. Providers must be committed to offering the correct route for prospective students. Educational direction is as much about guiding people on establishing which way to go, as much as giving them help to get there.

So, why ought we to be looking at commercial qualifications rather than more traditional academic qualifications obtained from schools and Further Education colleges? As we require increasingly more effective technological know-how, industry has had to move to specific, honed-in training that can only come from the vendors – namely companies like Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe. This usually turns out to involve less time and financial outlay. They do this through focusing on the skill-sets required (together with a proportionate degree of associated knowledge,) instead of going into the heightened depths of background detail and ‘fluff’ that academic courses often do – to fill a three or four year course.

What if you were an employer – and you required somebody who had very specific skills. What should you do: Pore through a mass of different academic qualifications from hopeful applicants, having to ask what each has covered and which trade skills they have, or choose particular accreditations that exactly fulfil your criteria, and make your short-list from that. The interview is then more about the person and how they’ll fit in – rather than on the depth of their technical knowledge.

Some training providers offer a Job Placement Assistance facility, to assist your search for your first position. Don’t get overly impressed with this service – it’s quite easy for companies marketing departments to overplay it. At the end of the day, the need for well trained IT people in the UK is what will make you attractive to employers.

However, don’t wait till you’ve qualified before getting your CV updated. As soon as your training commences, enter details of your study programme and get it out there! Having the possibility of an interview is far better than not even being known about. Often junior support roles are got by people (who’ve only just left first base.) If you’d like to get employment in your home town, then it’s quite likely that a specialist locally based employment agency can generally be of more use than a centralised service, because they are much more inclined to be familiar with local employment needs.

In a nutshell, as long as you put the same commitment into landing your first IT position as into training, you won’t have any problems. A number of trainees bizarrely spend hundreds of hours on their learning program and then call a halt once they’ve got certified and seem to expect employers to find them.

A ridiculously large number of organisations focus completely on the certification process, and avoid focusing on what you actually need – which will always be getting the job or career you want. You should always begin with the final destination in mind – don’t get hung-up on the training vehicle. Don’t be one of those unfortunate students who set off on a track which looks like it could be fun – and end up with a certification for an unrewarding career path.

Be honest with yourself about earning potential and what level of ambition fits you. Sometimes, this affects which precise certifications will be expected and what industry will expect from you in return. Before setting out on a particular study course, it makes sense to talk through the specific career needs with an experienced professional, so as to be sure the study program covers everything needed.

The area most overlooked by people mulling over a new direction is the issue of ‘training segmentation’. Essentially, this is the method used to break up the program for drop-shipping to you, which completely controls the point you end up at. Typically, you will join a program staged over 2 or 3 years and get posted one section at a time – from one exam to the next. It seems to make sense on one level, but consider these issues: What would their reaction be if you find it difficult to do each element within the time limits imposed? Often the staged order won’t fit you as well as some other structure would for you.

To provide the maximum security and flexibility, many trainees now want to insist that all study materials are sent immediately, and not in a piecemeal fashion. It’s then up to you in which order and at what speed you want to work.

There are colossal changes coming via technology over the next few decades – and the industry becomes more ground-breaking every year. Many people are of the opinion that the revolution in technology we’ve been going through is easing off. Nothing could be further from the truth. We have yet to experience incredible advances, and the internet significantly will be the most effective tool in our lives.

The usual IT man or woman over this country as a whole will also receive considerably more than equivalent professionals in much of the rest of the economy. Typical incomes are hard to beat nationally. The need for well trained and qualified IT technicians is guaranteed for the significant future, thanks to the substantial growth in this sector and the very large deficiency still present.

by Jason Kendall

Were it not for a continuous flood of knowledgeable PC and network support staff, business in the United Kingdom (and around the world) would be likely to be brought to its knees. Therefore, there’s an ever growing demand for technically able people to support both the systems and the users themselves. Our country’s need for increasing numbers of skilled and qualified individuals grows, as we turn out to be vastly more reliant on PC’s in these modern times.

Every program under consideration should always lead to a commercially valid accreditation at the finale – not some little ‘in-house’ diploma – fit only for filing away and forgetting. Only nationally recognised examinations from the top companies like Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA and Adobe will have any meaning to employers.

A so-called advisor who doesn’t dig around with lots of question – chances are they’re really a salesperson. If they wade straight in with a specific product before looking at your personality and current experience level, then it’s definitely the case. In some circumstances, the starting point of study for a trainee with some experience is hugely different to the student with no experience. If you’re a new trainee starting IT studies and exams anew, it’s often a good idea to ease in gradually, starting with some basic Microsoft package and Windows skills first. Usually this is packaged with any educational course.

Locating job security in this economic down-turn is very rare. Businesses often remove us from the workforce with very little notice – as long as it fits their needs. But a sector experiencing fast growth, where there just aren’t enough staff to go round (as there is a massive shortage of properly qualified staff), provides a market for true job security.

Offering the IT business as an example, the 2006 e-Skills study highlighted massive skills shortages in the United Kingdom of around 26 percent. To put it another way, this reveals that the United Kingdom only has three properly accredited workers for each 4 positions existing today. Attaining the appropriate commercial computing certification is accordingly a fast-track to succeed in a long-term as well as gratifying career. In actuality, gaining new qualifications in IT throughout the coming years is almost definitely the greatest career move you’ll ever make.

It’s important to understand: a actual training or a qualification isn’t the end-goal; the job or career that you want to end up in is. Too many training companies over-emphasise just the training course. You could be training for only a year and end up doing a job for a lifetime. Avoid the mistake of choosing what sounds like a very ‘interesting’ program and then put 10-20 years into a job you don’t like!

Never let your focus stray from where you want to go, and create a learning-plan from that – avoid getting them back-to-front. Keep your eyes on your goals and ensure that you’re training for a career that will keep you happy for many years. Have a conversation with an experienced industry advisor that has a commercial understanding of the realities faced in the industry, and could provide a detailed run-down of the kind of things you’ll be doing on a daily basis. Contemplating this before starting out on a retraining path will prevent a lot of wasted time and effort.

Your training program should always include the current Microsoft (or relevant organisation’s) authorised simulation materials and exam preparation packages. Avoid depending on unofficial exam preparation systems. The type of questions asked is often somewhat different – and this leads to huge confusion when the proper exam time arrives. Why don’t you verify your knowledge by doing tests and practice in simulated exam environments before you take the real deal.
